The American Measurement Standard
The American Measurement Standard for single family homes is the brainchild of Hamp Thomas, a broker and appraiser in North Carolina that they call The Measure Man. It can be obtained via his web site How To Measure a House for a cost of $22.95 for a print version or $14.95 as an Adobe Acrobat download. While you are on his web site, check out his other publications, including his book entitled Size Matters - Square Footage, The Currency of Real Estate. This is a truly unique treatise on the industry practices relating to the measurement of houses that is a much better read than you might expect. At 64 pages including many illustrations, photographs and examples, this standard is by far the most concise residential measurement standard available and is generally compatable with the NAHB Standard except for it's treatment of interior stairs. This document does not address apartments or multi-family units. |
