Residental Building Measurement Standards

Residential building measurements can be fraught with potential litigation if you are unaware of state and local statutes, and rules that are geared toward consumer protection. That being said, there are a few good residential measurement standards available.

• The National Association of Home Builders publishes a measurement standard for single-family homes, row houses and duplexes.
• The American Measurement Standard is another methodology for measuring single family homes.
• The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) publishes Multi-Unit Residential Buildings: Standards for Measurement as a guide to measurement of residential buildings containing 4 or more living units.
• Condominiums and Co-op measurements may be subject to state statutes that are often incorporated in their declarations.
